Food and drink in and around the Drosselgasse

In the Drosselgasse, a lane 144 metres long, wine taverns and inns stand side by side, many with live music; all around in the old town, on the Rhine and up on the Niederwald there are restaurants, cafés and Gutsausschänke (winery taverns).1,2 Here you will find the businesses with their address and a link to their own website.

No guarantee, as of 17 October 2026. Opening times, rest days (Ruhetag – the day a restaurant is closed) and prices change; please check them on the business’s website before your visit. Is something wrong or is a business missing? Write to us: redaktion@drosselgasse-rüdesheim.de

How the list was compiled

We have included businesses that are listed with the Rüdesheim tourist information office or with the traders’ association around the Drosselgasse (Werbegemeinschaft rund um die Drosselgasse).3,2 Both directories list their member and partner businesses – our list is therefore not complete. The order follows the location, not a rating. No business has paid for its entry, and we do not rate.

In the Drosselgasse

The lane itself belongs to the wine taverns and inns. The best-known house is the Drosselhof, the oldest house in the lane and a wine tavern since 1857.4 At the Rüdesheimer Schloss the chimes play on the hour.5 More about the houses and their history: Well-known names and places.

Old town: Oberstraße, Steingasse, market

At the upper end of the Drosselgasse it crosses the Oberstraße; here and in the neighbouring lanes there are further inns, wine shops (Vinotheken) and ice-cream cafés.

Wine tasting

According to the tourist information office, you can taste wine in Rüdesheim on a boat, at tasting stands in the town and directly at the winemaker’s.42 The tourist information office also mentions guided tastings in wine cellars, guided wine walks through the vineyards and wine cabinets along hiking trails where you serve yourself.43 In the Asbachgasse, the RheinWeinWelt vinotheque lets you taste wines from 76 winemakers of the region yourself at dispensers.44

Straußwirtschaft (seasonal wine tavern run by a winemaker): according to the tourist information office, this is the most typical way to enjoy wine and sparkling wine in the Rheingau – following the rule “Wo’s Sträuß’che hängt, wird ausgeschenkt” (where the little wreath hangs, wine is served): a wreath by the door of the wine estate shows that it is open. The tourist information office gives a serving period of no more than four months a year for a Straußwirtschaft, so opening times are limited; Gutsausschänke, according to the office, serve guests all year round.3 The legal rules for such taverns are set by the German federal states, so they can differ from one state to another.45 When which Straußwirtschaft is open is shown by the wine estate itself.

Wine estates: According to the tourist information office, Riesling and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) are at the centre, the latter especially from Assmannshausen, where Spätburgunder has been grown since 1507.46,3 The tourist information office lists the wine estates in Rüdesheim, Assmannshausen and Aulhausen on its page “Weingüter”.46

If you taste wine, plan your return without a car: trains and the ferry are covered under Getting there.

Rüdesheimer Kaffee

Rüdesheimer Kaffee (Rüdesheim coffee) is coffee with flambéed Asbach Uralt and cream.47 Whether a business serves it is shown on its menu; if you are driving, ask for an alcohol-free version. Origin and preparation: Rüdesheimer Kaffee.
